How Disposable Email Works

TempMail Team · 7 min read · January 22, 2026

The basics

Disposable email services operate mail servers that accept incoming messages for dynamically created addresses. When you generate an inbox, the system registers a recipient on an available domain and stores messages in a database tied to your session.

Message flow

  1. You request a new mailbox address
  2. The service creates a mailbox record
  3. Senders deliver mail via standard SMTP to that address
  4. The service parses and stores the message
  5. Your browser refreshes the inbox page to display new mail
  6. Nightly jobs remove emails older than the retention window

Privacy considerations

Reputable services minimize logging, hash identifiers where possible, and auto-delete data. Always read the privacy policy before trusting a provider with sensitive content.

TempMail approach

TempMail combines REST APIs, rate limiting, spam scoring, and automatic cleanup to balance usability with abuse prevention.
